Substitute teachers play an important role in keeping our classrooms running smoothly and ensuring students continue learning when their regular teachers are away. Whether you are exploring a career in education, looking for a flexible opportunity, or simply want to give back to your community, substitute teaching is a meaningful way to make a difference in the lives of students.
📋 How do you get started?
✅ Meet the age requirement: You must be at least 18 years old.
✅ Provide education documentation: A high school diploma is required. If you do not have one, you must provide documentation of a GED or its equivalent.
✅ Complete the online application: Submit the required substitute teaching application.
✅ Meet with a principal: Contact the school where you would like to substitute to schedule an appointment. If approved as a potential substitute, the school will refer you to the School Board Office.
✅ Complete the background check process: After your application is submitted and you are referred by a principal, contact Gary Lawson at 276-328-3017 to request a background check. The background check costs $42.
✅ Attend substitute training: Complete the substitute training provided by the School Board Office.
✅ Receive clearance and begin accepting assignments: Once you are cleared to work, the school you selected will contact you when an opportunity becomes available. You will also be added to the absence management system to receive notifications about future substitute assignments.
