WiseJAMS Applications Open After-School Music Program WiseJAMS-Wise Begins Wednesday, Sept. 18th WiseJAMS-Big Stone Gap Begins Thursday, Sept. 19th Applications are open for the Fall 2024 semester of the WiseJAMS after-school music program. WiseJAMS provides traditional mountain music instruction and cultural enrichment opportunities for students in 3rd grade and up. WiseJAMS strives to encourage the preservation of the artistic heritage of the region by providing experience with traditional Appalachian music and culture. The WiseJAMS-Wise program will offer lessons on Wednesdays from 3:30–5:30 p.m. beginning September 18th. WiseJAMS-Wise takes place at L.F. Addington Middle School and serves students attending Wise Primary, L.F. Addington, and J.W. Adams Combined School in Pound. Bus transportation will be provided from J.W. Adams Combined School to L.F. Addington Middle School. The WiseJAMS-Big Stone Gap program will offer lessons on Thurdays from 3:45–5:45 p.m. beginning September 19th. WiseJAMS-Big Stone Gap takes place at the Southwest Virginia Museum and serves students attending Union Primary and Middle. There will be a parent meeting on Sept. 17 at 6 p.m. For parent meeting information, please call (276) 523-1322. Students can choose to learn guitar, fiddle, or banjo. Program cost is $15 per lesson. Full and partial scholarships may be available for those in need, please speak with the site coordinator to inquire further. Youth who participate in this program are required to attend all weekly classes. During the classes, students will receive an after-school snack and a 90-minute instructional session. Parents or guardians are responsible for picking up their children from the lessons. To register a student for the WiseJAMS program, please submit the registration form at proartva.org/wisejams by September 16th, 2024. Rolling admission will be accepted as space allows through September 30th. The program also provides instruments for semester-long loan at no cost. To request an instrument, please submit the instrument loan agreement. From our Food Services Department: The Virginia Department of Social Services will issue a one-time $120 food benefit through Virginia SUN Bucks beginning August 2024 to children who qualify. Children qualify and are automatically enrolled in Virginia SUN Bucks if they receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), or an income-based Medical Assistance Program (Medicaid). If you are not enrolled in SNAP, TANF, or Medicaid you can apply and potentially qualify for Virginia SUN Bucks by visiting VirginiaSunBucks.com and mailing the application to: Virginia Sun Bucks c/o VDSS 5600 Cox Road Glen Allen, VA 23060. Applications will not be available until July 1, when the webpage goes live. The Application for SUN Bucks will require you to enter your child’s “Local Student ID Number.” Contact the school your child attends to get this number. If you qualify, SUN Bucks benefits will be distributed beginning August 2024 on a rolling basis and will be loaded onto your current SNAP EBT Card or a Virginia SUN Bucks card.
