October is National Physical Therapy Month!
This month, we celebrate and recognize our dedicated school-based physical therapists, Dr. Cindy Kays and Mrs. Jeannie Jackson, who help students build strength, improve mobility, develop motor skills, and access their educational environment with greater independence. Dr. Kays is a doctor of physical therapy, and Mrs. Jackson is a licensed physical therapy assistant.
Through individualized support, collaboration, and a commitment to student success, our physical therapists empower students to overcome challenges, achieve their goals, and participate more actively in all aspects of the school environment.

Distinguished Educator Spotlight: Mrs. Jayme Fields | Coeburn Primary School
Jayme Fields has dedicated six years to education, with a passion for helping students recognize their potential, discover new opportunities, and develop the skills they need to succeed. Her journey into education began with a career opportunity in the counseling office at Central High School. What started as an unexpected opportunity quickly changed her perspective on her future and inspired her to pursue ways to better support students throughout Southwest Virginia.
Jayme graduated from Eastside High School before continuing her education at Mountain Empire Community College, where she earned an Associate of Arts degree in Psychology in 2018. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Sociology from the University of Virginia's College at Wise in 2021 and a Master of Arts in Student Services from Liberty University in 2022. She is currently pursuing a master's degree in School Counseling at Liberty University, with an anticipated graduation in 2026, as well as a Doctor of Education degree from South College, with an anticipated graduation in 2028.
Through her continued education, Jayme hopes to strengthen her ability to serve her community and support the students of Southwest Virginia. As a school counselor, no two days are alike. Each day brings different needs, challenges, and opportunities to make a difference. Whether helping a student navigate a difficult situation, advocating for a student who is learning to speak up for themselves, or connecting a child with resources and opportunities, Jayme strives to ensure that every student feels supported and empowered.
One of the most rewarding aspects of her work is seeing students grow and accomplish things they once believed were out of reach. Whether a student learns a new skill, gains acceptance into their dream college, or discovers a career path they never thought possible, those moments make the work worthwhile. Her time at Central High School remains especially meaningful because she witnessed students pursue a college education at no cost to themselves and discover promising career opportunities they had never imagined.
Jayme believes one of the greatest challenges educators face is teaching students to advocate for themselves. Education involves much more than helping students succeed in the classroom; it also means equipping them with the skills and confidence to become independent individuals who can contribute positively to society and pursue the futures they envision for themselves.
In addition to her work in education, Jayme has a strong background in softball coaching. She served as a junior varsity softball coach at Central High School from 2021 to 2023 and as a middle school softball coach at Castlewood High School from 2023 to 2026. She has also coached Clinch River Little League softball at the 9–12 and Senior League levels since 2018. Through coaching, she continues to encourage young people to grow, build confidence, and develop skills that extend beyond the field.
Outside of school, family is at the center of Jayme's life. She and her husband, Calleb, recently welcomed their first baby boy, Stryker. Jayme credits her family and in-laws for providing the love, encouragement, and support that have helped her reach her goals. Their influence has helped instill in her a lifelong passion for education and a love of learning.
Jayme's favorite books are The Hunger Games series. Through her work as an educator, counselor, and coach, she remains committed to helping students recognize their strengths, overcome challenges, and discover possibilities for their futures. Her greatest hope is to continue making a meaningful difference in the lives of students and families throughout her community.

As October comes to an end, we want to recognize and thank our incredible leadership team throughout Wise County Public Schools for their commitment to students, families, schools, and communities.
Being a principal means wearing many hats, supporting teachers, encouraging students, working with families, and making sure our schools are places where everyone can succeed. We know it takes a lot of hard work, many late evenings, patience, and heart, and we truly appreciate the time and effort our principals give each day.
To our principals, thank you for showing up, leading by example, and always putting your school communities first. The difference you make does not go unnoticed, and we are grateful to have you leading our schools!
Distinguished Educator Spotlight: Mrs. Tracy Bishop | Union High School
With 18 years in education as a substitute teacher, paraprofessional, and teacher, Mrs. Tracy Bishop (Union High School) has dedicated her career to helping students succeed both inside and outside the classroom. A graduate of Appalachia High School, Tracy earned her degree from King University in 2015 and is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Educational Leadership through Western Governors University. Her goal is to continue growing as an educator and make an even greater difference in the lives of her students.
Tracy believes that every student needs someone who cares, encourages them, and believes in their potential. For her, the most rewarding part of education is watching students grow, step outside their comfort zones, and create memories they will carry with them long after graduation. She also understands that making a difference often goes beyond the classroom.
As the sponsor of the Union High School After Prom Committee, Tracy helps promote student safety through Prom Promise Week, peer-to-peer advocacy with UPS, and the annual After Prom event, which features more than 150 prizes to encourage safe choices. She also helps organize the school's annual Powder Puff football game. Tracy is quick to recognize that these events would not be possible without the generosity and dedication of local businesses, families, and community members who volunteer their time and resources. She believes it truly takes a village to create meaningful opportunities for students.
Although balancing teaching, school activities, and the many responsibilities that come with education can be challenging, Tracy stays focused on why she chose this profession. She strives to stay organized, take things as they come, and remember that the time and effort she invests can have a lasting impact on a student's life. Her favorite book is The Book Thief, and one of her favorite quotes reflects the values she hopes to model for others: “Never let someone else’s behavior change the person you choose to be.”
Outside of school, Tracy enjoys spending time with her husband and children, keeping up with sports, and attending concerts whenever she gets the chance. Family is especially important to her, and she treasures making memories with her loved ones and appreciating life's little moments. Through her dedication to her students, school, and community, Tracy Bishop continues to make a difference at Union High School, one student and one memory at a time.
Distinguished Educator Spotlight: Mrs. Samantha McKnight | Union High School
Meet Samantha McKnight, a dedicated educator at Union High School who is passionate about inspiring students, helping them discover their potential, and creating a classroom environment where they feel encouraged to succeed.
With four years of experience in education, Samantha’s journey began after attending Central High School and continuing her postsecondary education at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, where she studied from 2019 to 2021. She is currently pursuing her master’s degree in biology through Arizona State University, reflecting her commitment to lifelong learning and continued professional growth. She hopes to use her knowledge and passion for education to teach college-level courses to high school students or eventually become an adjunct professor.
Samantha was inspired to become an educator by her love of teaching others and introducing them to new ideas. For her, one of the most rewarding aspects of the profession is watching students accomplish things they once believed were beyond their abilities. Seeing students overcome challenges, gain confidence, and take pride in their accomplishments reminds her why she chose this career.
Behind the scenes, Samantha relies on routine, organization, and multitasking to keep her classroom running smoothly. From preparing materials and grading assignments to maintaining her classroom calendar, she understands the time and effort it takes to create meaningful learning experiences. She strives to maintain a balance that allows her to stay organized while ensuring her students have a positive and engaging environment in which to learn.
One of the biggest challenges she continues to navigate is finding time for herself amid the many demands of teaching. She recognizes the importance of prioritizing personal well-being and is working toward maintaining a healthy balance between her professional responsibilities and personal life.
In addition to her classroom responsibilities, Samantha served as an assistant soccer coach for three years and is one of the chapter leaders for Union High School’s National Honor Society. Her commitment to students extends beyond academics, reflecting her desire to support and encourage them in all aspects of their growth.
Outside of school, Samantha enjoys reading, completing coursework for her master’s degree, and training for her next race. One of her favorite books is Alchemised by SenLinYu. She also recently married her high school sweetheart in June and adores her beloved fur baby, Molly. As the oldest of three siblings, family remains an important part of her life.
Samantha McKnight’s passion for education, commitment to lifelong learning, and dedication to helping students recognize their own potential make her a valued member of the Union High School community. Her greatest success is not simply helping students learn something new, but helping them discover that they are capable of more than they ever imagined.

Jerry’s journey with WCPS began in 1984 when he started driving a school bus full time for Coeburn High School. He even substituted as a bus driver while a senior in high school! After 14 years behind the wheel, Jerry transitioned to the bus garage in 1996, where he has continued serving our division.
Today, Jerry’s responsibilities include checking brakes, completing inspections, performing general maintenance, and repairing anything that needs attention to help keep our buses safe and road-ready. When asked about his years with WCPS, Jerry shared that he has “enjoyed it all.” He especially appreciates the close-knit group of mechanics who work together, support one another, and lend a helping hand whenever needed.
Outside of work, Jerry enjoys fishing and camping. He also credits his family for supporting him throughout his years of service. Jerry and his wife, Sheila, have two children, Daniel and Dustin, and are proud grandparents to their grandson, Carter.

Athletic Director Spotlight: Tyler McFarland, Union High School | Part 2 of 3
Behind every successful athletic program is someone working tirelessly behind the scenes to make it all happen! In Part 2 of our Athletic Director Spotlight series, Wise County Public Schools is proud to feature Mr. Tyler McFarland, Athletic Director at Union High School!
A proud Union High School graduate, Tyler has dedicated nine years to education, combining his passion for athletics, coaching, and student success with a strong commitment to leadership. His educational journey includes degrees from Mountain Empire Community College, UVA Wise, and Lincoln Memorial University, where he earned his master's degree and Education Specialist degree in educational leadership. He is currently pursuing his Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership at the University of the Cumberlands, with an anticipated graduation in spring 2027.
Tyler's experience in athletics spans multiple sports, including baseball, boys' basketball, volleyball, and golf. Throughout his coaching career, he has served in several roles, including assistant coach and head coach at the junior varsity and middle school levels. One of his career highlights came in 2021 when he was part of the coaching staff for Union's state championship boys' basketball team!
For Tyler, becoming an athletic director was a natural next step. His years of teaching and coaching helped prepare him for the organizational demands and daily challenges of managing an athletic program. From preparing facilities and coordinating game officials to organizing ticket sales, concessions, transportation, and countless behind-the-scenes details, Tyler works to ensure student-athletes, coaches, and visiting teams have a positive experience.
But what makes the job most rewarding? Supporting coaches and student-athletes and watching them grow into successful individuals. Tyler believes athletics teach lessons that extend far beyond the playing field, including how to overcome adversity, respond to failure, celebrate others' successes, and work toward a common goal.
One experience that stands out is Union's girls' basketball team's journey to the state championship game last year. Tyler was especially proud of the way the community rallied around the team, helping provide tickets and meals for more than 100 students to attend the championship in Richmond. With three pep buses, a cheer bus, a band bus, and the team making the trip, the community demonstrated the incredible support and school spirit that make Union special!
Tyler emphasizes that successful athletic administration requires organization, established routines, flexibility, and trust in the people working alongside you. While challenges are inevitable, teamwork and preparation help keep everything moving in the right direction.
Outside of school, Tyler enjoys spending time with his wife of seven years, Erika, a reading specialist at Union Primary, and their children, Piper and Liam. The family loves visiting Dollywood and attending events together. Tyler also serves as parliamentarian on the UVA Wise Alumni Board and is a member of the Big Stone Gap Planning Commission.

Athletic Director Spotlight: Jeremy Salyers
Eastside High School | Part 1 of 3
Behind every successful athletic program is someone working hard behind the scenes to make it all happen. At Wise County Public Schools, we want to recognize and celebrate our athletic directors, who balance the many demands of leading school athletic programs while also serving as assistant principals at their respective high schools.
This three-part Athletic Director Spotlight series highlights the people behind our athletic programs and the many responsibilities that come with the role. From managing financial budgets and securing sponsorships to coordinating transportation, directing tournaments, recognizing district, regional, and state honors, ensuring compliance and student eligibility, and helping move legislation forward with the Virginia High School League (VHSL), athletic directors wear many hats. All of this is in addition to their daily responsibilities as assistant principals.
Our first spotlight features Jeremy Salyers, Athletic Director and Assistant Principal at Eastside High School!
A graduate of Pound High School, Mr. Salyers has dedicated 24 years to education, including 22 years as a teacher. His educational journey includes studies at Radford University, Walters State Community College, UVA-Wise, and Mountain Empire Community College (MECC). He also brings approximately 20 years of experience as a head baseball coach at Powell Valley, Union, and Central. In his role as an athletic director, he has also served as district secretary.
We asked Mr. Salyers to share more about his journey, the responsibilities of his role, and what makes being an athletic director so rewarding.
What inspired you to become an athletic director, and what has your journey in education and athletics looked like?
“I love sports. I've always enjoyed sports and being around them. I've done AD duties at three different schools and have enjoyed helping alleviate some of the daily stresses from our coaches by doing the ‘behind-the-scenes’ things so they don't have to.”
What does a typical day look like for you as an athletic director? What are some responsibilities people may not realize you manage behind the scenes?
“Ensuring referees are assigned to each of our home games, our athletes have current physicals on file, our athletes are academically eligible, making sure gatekeepers are scheduled for home games, among many other things.”
What is the most rewarding part of your job, and is there a particular moment or experience that stands out in your career?
“The rewarding part of the job is ensuring each student that attends Eastside has the opportunity to participate in an extracurricular activity. We offer something for every student if they wish to participate.”
What is one of the biggest challenges athletic directors face, and how do you work to balance the many demands of your role?
“The biggest challenge, in my opinion, is that the workload has increased as technology has improved. Technology like Arbiter and Luxedo is wonderful, but it has increased the amount of time I spend daily on AD duties during the school day. It does take away time from my assistant principal duties. It's a tough balance to manage.”
What do you hope student-athletes learn from participating in school athletics beyond the game itself?
“Athletics closely resemble life. You may work hard to achieve a desired outcome, but you may not always reach your goal.”
Outside of school, Mr. Salyers enjoys spending time with his wife, Amber Salyers, who serves as an assistant principal at JWAC. Together, they enjoy camping, bike riding, attending church, and traveling.
Wise County Public Schools appreciates Mr. Salyers and the dedication he brings to Eastside High School. The work of an athletic director extends far beyond the playing field, requiring countless hours of planning, coordination, problem-solving, and support to ensure students and coaches have the opportunities and resources they need to succeed.
