Wise County Department of Social Services has initiated the D-SNAP program for residents of Wise County who were impacted by hurricane Helene. The eligibility criteria for D-SNAP is less strict in order to provide food assistance to households that might not otherwise qualify for SNAP. *If you are not already a SNAP recipient* we will take in-person applications Monday, November 18, 2024 through Friday, November 22, 2024 from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm at 10365 Pinnacle Dive, Wise VA 24293. Be sure to bring your ID when coming to apply. You will also need to be able to provide demographic information for all members of your household including Social Security Numbers. You must be in line before 6:00 pm Friday, November 22, 2024 to receive an application. **Current SNAP recipients** do not need to apply. An automatic supplemental allocation will load to your EBT card by November 22, 2024. Hello UMS! We received our school score from our performance last year on lots of different metrics. SOLs are not all we are graded on now, and things like attendance, growth, advanced scores, etc. matter. I am very proud to say that our school score was 87.4. This puts us in the high portion of the "on track" designation. We are so happy to have this. Our school is a good school and the reasons are the families, teachers, students, and staff. We have high expectations for ALL of our students and we try to push them to be better student-citizens. We are not perfect, but we work hard to be a good school.

Hello UMS, I learned something today. We have a third veteran on our staff. One of our newest employees, Specialist Heather Allen who works in our cafeteria, is also a veteran. She was in active combat in Operation Iraqi Freedom in the Army. Happy Veterans Day to Spc. Allen also!!!

UMS would like to wish a very happy VETERANS DAY to two of our finest; Sgt. Brian Renfro and Major Frank Brooks. We are so happy to have them on our staff working with our kids. Both were highly decorated and retired from the armed services. We are so proud of Sgt. Renfro and Maj. Brooks! And proud of all that have served to make this country great!

A great end to Red Ribbon week today with the mock election! Over 400 students voted today and we used the Town of Appalachia ballot. We are closed Monday and Tuesday for a nice long break! Thank you to everyone for supporting Red Ribbon Week and our students. I hope that everyone has an awesome break! Go Bears, beat the Falcons! Go Cats, beat the Vols! LOL

Clarification on that last message I sent so that we are all clear: There is no school tomorrow so MS girls basketball tryouts will start at 3:30. (I think everyone understood that but I want to make sure everyone knows it's at 3:30 tomorrow) Again, Middle School girls basketball tryouts begin tomorrow at 3:30 at UMS and last until 4:30 tomorrow.
