Parents or Guardians of Students 5-11 years, On Tuesday, November 2, 2021, ACIP and CDC approved the use of pediatric Pfizer vaccine for children 5-11 years. The LENOWISCO Health District is pleased to offer the pediatric Pfizer COVID19 vaccine for those students 5-11 years. The schedule is:  November 8, 2021 at Union Primary School at 9:00 a.m., and at Union Middle School at 10:30 a.m.  November 12, 2021 at JW Adams Combined School at 9:00 a.m., Wise Primary at 10:45 a.m., and LF Addington Middle School at 1:30 p.m.  November 19, 2021 at Coeburn Primary School at 9:00 a.m., at Coeburn Middle School at 10:30 a.m. and at St. Paul Elementary School at 1:30 p.m. Parents who consent for their child to receive pediatric Pfizer vaccine at school clinics are encouraged to attend the vaccine clinic with your child or children. Children that are 5-11 years will also be able to access pediatric Pfizer vaccine at some local healthcare providers and pharmacies. The Pfizer vaccine is a two-dose series. The second dose is recommended to be given 21 days after the first dose. Two weeks after receiving the second dose, persons are considered fully vaccinated. Being fully vaccinated reduces the risk of disease, hospitalization, and death. Being vaccinated also protects friends, family, and the community. If you have questions or concerns about pediatric Pfizer vaccine for your child, please contact your child’s healthcare provider. Once fully vaccinated, you do not have to quarantine if exposed to COVID-19. It is important for those 5-11 years to be vaccinated to help prevent the spread of the virus in schools, sports, and other extracurricular activities. Wearing masks, social distancing, washing hands help reduce the spread, and now receiving the COVID-19 vaccine is an important tool to help prevent the spread of disease. Common side effects from the vaccine include pain at the injection site, headache, muscle or joint pain, fever, and chills. These side effects typically resolve within 12-24 hours. Please review the Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for specific vaccine information: https://www.fda.gov/media/153717/download To register your student for a vaccine, you will sign them up online on the VASE+ system. To schedule the appointment, review the EUA, and sign the consent, please use the specific vaccine link for your child’s school: Union Primary School Nov 8: https://vase.vdh.virginia.gov/vdhapps/f?p=535:205:::NO:205:P205_CLINIC_DETAILS_ID:275713413199797080957789461226881451179 Union Middle School Nov 8: https://vase.vdh.virginia.gov/vdhapps/f?p=535:205:::NO:205:P205_CLINIC_DETAILS_ID:275713436616722850380596620224017096292 JW Adams Combined School Nov 12: https://vase.vdh.virginia.gov/vdhapps/f?p=535:205:::NO:205:P205_CLINIC_DETAILS_ID:275713436616789341300675424828625935972 Wise Primary School Nov 12: https://vase.vdh.virginia.gov/vdhapps/f?p=535:205:::NO:205:P205_CLINIC_DETAILS_ID:275713434037779427780709471802589077917 LF Addington Middle School Nov 12: https://vase.vdh.virginia.gov/vdhapps/f?p=535:205:::NO:205:P205_CLINIC_DETAILS_ID:275713688400933987136785557314794583322 Coeburn Primary School Nov 19: https://vase.vdh.virginia.gov/vdhapps/f?p=535:205:::NO:205:P205_CLINIC_DETAILS_ID:275714341080945873075859512001156523726 Coeburn Middle School Nov 19: https://vase.vdh.virginia.gov/vdhapps/f?p=535:205:::NO:205:P205_CLINIC_DETAILS_ID:275714411799321177092420017560457195829 St Paul Elementary School Nov 19: https://vase.vdh.virginia.gov/vdhapps/f?p=535:205:::NO:205:P205_CLINIC_DETAILS_ID:275714337974043992149185477645869660114 The consent must be signed in order to receive the vaccine. Effective November 1, 2021, the LENOWISCO Health District will allow the shortened 7- day quarantine as an option for all K-12 students, and Wise County Public schools will offer this option. What is the 7-day quarantine? Unvaccinated individuals who are exposed to Covid-19 outside of their household may return to school on Day 8 if they have a negative PCR or antigen test performed on or after day 5 of their exposure AND they have no symptoms. It is imperative that symptoms are continually monitored for 14 full days following exposure and students should avoid large gatherings and wear a mask around others (in and out of school). Unvaccinated individuals who have ongoing household exposure may return to school 8 days following the positive household member’s last day of isolation if no symptoms. Test Results: The local health departments will be unable to verify any negative results for the schools unless the testing was done by the health department and permission is given by parents/guardians to share the test results. Wise County Public Schools continues to accept Covid Home Testing. A picture of the results, if done at home and non-proctored by a Telehealth organization, should be shared with the school nurse. This 7-day option is not without risk and students may have a negative test and no symptoms on day 8 and still have Covid. Please note: If LENOWISCO Health District sees surges of Covid cases, the 7-day option may revert to the 10-day quarantine, until there is a decline. Our primary goal is to keep our students and staff healthy and in our schools.
